Repairs - Materials - Teaching
Welcome to Old
House Repairs which is dedicated to the repair of pre-WWII properties using traditional materials' and to
the sale of breathable paints and plasters.
Repairs I carry out repair
and decoration to older properties using traditional materials such as Lime Mortars, Plasters & Renders, and Lime Wash
and other Traditional Paints. Examples of work done can be found on the Repairs page.
Materials I make and supply a range of traditional materials - all products have been tried
and tested, and are made with time-honoured methods and recipes. Please see the Lime Plasters, Mortars and
Renders page and the Lime Wash page. Please take a look at the new Home Made Paints
page - this will include details of paints made with natural ingredients and to traditional recipes used when people
made their own paints. This includes clay paints, milk paints, and linseed oil paints - all in a range of colours;
and also a smoothing coat which is a brush-on filler for small holes and cracks.
My name
is Nigel Chapman and I have 20 years experience of hands-on repair to old houses from Elizabethan through to Edwardian including
listed property, and have always ensured that any work has been sympathetic to a building's age, character and construction.
Over the years I have built up a true admiration of lime and other traditional building materials, and a full understanding
of why they are the best to use in repairs to old properties. Modern building materials are excellent but, despite being
very convenient to buy and use, they are very often inappropriate for use in older buildings as they can cause damage to the
structure resulting in expensive remedial work and/or a loss in value of the property.
Teaching Have you ever thought about doing some of the repair work yourself? If you have recently purchased an old
property, or if repairs are needed to your period house, or if you have old outbuildings that you want to renovate then
I can come and teach you how to do the work yourself. Owning an old house can be expensive and labour costs can mount
up if there are several building or maintenance jobs that require doing. Not only can you save a lot of money by doing some
of the work yourself, but you can also have the pleasure of learning some new skills. Using traditional materials is
a lot easier than might be thought and is more of a craft than a DIY chore. Once you have learnt about the products
and the basic skills of application you will be amazed how many other jobs you will be able to confidently tackle.
A combination of Repair and Teaching is possible also. I can do a repair or building
project for you which can double up as a teaching exercise.
